Advice On Pediatric Tube Feeding

By Annabelle Holman

There are many things that can cause the premature birth of babies. These babies usually come into the world before all their body organs have fully developed thus they cannot survive by living normally. One of the main things that usually comes out being undeveloped in the digestive system thus these kids need other methods of nursing that will not require digestion. Pediatric tube feeding is one of the most common methods that are used to nourish these children.

This refers to the administering of liquid nutrients straight to the gastrointestinal tract with the use of a soft duct. It is used on people who cannot orally take food and is most common in pediatrics. Tube nursing can also be done on other people other than premature babies if they have conditions that do not allow them to eat food orally.

Some of the body conditions that prevent people from eating normally are neuromuscular illnesses like cerebral palsy, hyper metabolism problems such as burns or cancer, metabolic disorders, problems of food absorption and several other disorders that cannot all be mentioned.

Tube nursing can be divided into two categories that include enteral and parenteral nursing. Enteral nursing is used to put food to the gastrointestinal system and the body is left with the responsibility of digestion. This is used on babies with ingestion problems only. Parenteral nursing on the other hand administers the food straight into the blood stream. This is used when the baby has an undeveloped digestive system.

Enteral feeding is also divided into different classes which depend on the part in which the tube is led into the body and the part it administers the food. For instance, the nasogastric tube delivers the food from the nasal area to the stomach. The Nasodeudenal includes the delivery of food from the nose straight to the duodenum. Gastronomy tubes are usually inserted from a surgical opening anywhere on the skin.

Nasogastric tubes can be used on infants at home too. There are however some guidelines that must be followed carefully to make sure that there are no complications developed. One thing is to make sure that the tubes are replaced after short periods of time like two weeks. Sometimes the baby might pull the duct mistakenly before the changing time and in this case the same duct can be used.

The tubes being reused must be cleaned very well with lots of soap and clean water. The nostrils should be alternated when the duct is being replaced. It is important that the parent inspects the tube carefully to make sure its condition is great before it can be used. The duct should have wires that will strengthen it to prevent curling when it is inside the body. They should also measure the tubes before using them to make sure they are long enough to get to the destination they are required.

The child is not supposed to be in pain when the duct is being inserted. If this happens then something is wrong. Their nasal area must be regularly inspected to and also kept clean all the time to prevent any kinds of infections that may arise.
