Dennis Bird's Short Account of Inspiration by James Malinchak

By Liam Martin

Dennis Bird was a superstar defensive lineman for the New York Jets. As a defensive lineman, you regularly take a hit. They usually fall down and get right back up. In a normal season match, Dennis made a regular step to go into a position to sack the opposite team's quarterback. When he went forward to execute the sack, one of his team members lunged at the quarterback from the other side. He and Dennis collided with such a huge impact that it left Dennis lying on the field, paralyzed from the neck down. Physicians told Dennis he'd never walk again. He future looked bleak.

Can you envision his life? One minute everything was fine. In one moment, Dennis is playing a sport he loved, a sport he was good at playing. Picture your life coming to a crashing halt doing what you love most. We know we can get hurt playing sports, but we never expect that to happen to us. We would expect that crazy things happen when driving or skydiving. That's what happened to Dennis Bird.

Even with how bleak the outlook or how many physicians had said to him he was crippled for life, Dennis remained positive and told everybody that he won't give up fighting until he walked again. He said he would never stop believing in a miracle. Although he faced a tremendous struggle, Dennis said he would never stop believing that he could beat the odds.

Dennis walked onto the football field to a standing ovation before a Jets game several months later. When asked why he thought he was able to achieve what seemed impossible, Dennis stated it was due to his faith in God, the support of his family and friends. He said it was the point that he NEVER ceased thinking that he'd walk again! Miracles do happen!

Can you create the miracle in your life despite all the odds facing you? Miracles do happen!
