OOH Advertising And Its Forms

By Ina Hunt

Advertisements can reach consumers when they are out of their homes. This known as out of home advertising, also called OOH advertising. The main aim of this type of promotion is to reach consumers who are on the move, out in public places and in social and commercial surroundings such as malls. It has four main categories: billboards, street furniture, transit, and alternative.

For a long time, billboard use has grown significantly as a format in the outside publicity category. Although it is still quite popular, digital displays have been constructed and they too are becoming common. Still, billboards remain as one of the most thriving forms of outside marketing, being responsible for quite a sizeble amount of the out of home market for advertisement. Because of their popularity, they generate huge revenues.

Street furniture advertisement is another form of out of home publicity. It is common mostly in urban centers. It is most visible in newspaper stands, bicycle shelters, bus shelters, retail outlets as well as malls. They are placed in close proximity to pedestrians and shoppers to make more visible for eye-view. This form is beneficial to the community since it provides them with amenities such as bus shelters. Also, the building and maintenance of these amenities is not the responsibility of the community but rather that of street furniture companies.

The third form of out of home promotion is known as transit promotion. Here, advertisements are out on the move through placements on trucks, taxis, buses and also in subway advertising. As part of this form, fixed static advertising in train and bus stations is included. Transit advertisements are also found in airports, where businesses use advertising to address travelling audiences. Because of its capacity to generate revenue, municipalities and city authorities accept it.

The fourth form of out of home advertisement is alternative advertising. It is found in stadiums, lunch trucks, other non-traditional formats and also on gas pumps. This form grants businesses the chance to reach consumers in places they do not anticipate.

Put together, street furniture, transit and alternative promotion methods provide a large sum of the total revenue generated by outdoor marketing. Some of these formats even account for more advertisements than traditional billboards. Lunch truck publicity, as another form, gets placed on industrial lunch trucks and they then serve people for break, lunch and for dinner. These trucks offer out of hand materials, billboard styles and samples.

A host of operators, located in different locations around the world, make up the outdoor promotion industry. Collectively, they represent all the major forms of outdoor promotion. They range from small, independent, family-owned companies to large publicly traded companies and multimedia corporations.

Since it can get the message to customers with ease from almost any location away from their homes, out of home publicity has grown to become the most preferred medium by most advertisers. Brand s in real estate, retail, food services, finance and telecommunication heavily rely on this medium. Its capability to engage moving customers and influence their purchase appeals to them. Also, other people also get to gain from out of home product promotion.
