Very Useful Plastic Library Cards

By Paulette Short

Libraries are facilities that house huge collections of books spanning the range of categories and genres, along with a vast array of reference material on practically every imaginable subject. Some locations also have a fair selection of entertainment media as well. These materials are available for all members who hold plastic library cards to use either on site, or borrow for a determined amount of time.

The card is actually a form of identification by which the facility can keep track of which of its patrons has borrow what materials. It also allows the holder to access varied resources such as computers, media equipment and reference sources. Signing up for this type of membership means that the bearer understands and agrees to the terms by which property will be loaned and accepts the responsibility to care for, and return it in good condition, within a designated time frame or fees will be applied.

The services offered by these institutions are generally free of charge with small exceptions such as the overdue penalties. Some facilities are also able to provide discount admission to its members to various events or to rent out certain types of media equipment for affordable fees. Holding a card also denotes that an individual holds a membership and has the benefits of such.

It has been estimated that over half the population of America holds such a membership. There are very few age restrictions on who may have one as long as the parents of minors agree to assume responsibility for their children's actions. Facilities of this type are not limited to only offering books, but they also sponsor story time sessions for the little ones, reading groups for older kids, adults and seniors, author visits, concerts, movies and much more.

Though some libraries still use paper, most have updated to using plastic for their cards. This is partly due to durability issues, though they also offer the advantage of coming in both wallet and key chain forms. This is a great convenience to many who bear them because it gives easy access and choice.

Bar codes are imprinted on each unit that the librarian can scan and access all of the bearer's information and complete borrowing history. A patron's name may be paced on the surface by a stamping machine, adhering with a sticker, or by being written on with a permanent marker. These items are much more hearty than their paper predecessor and do not require as frequent replacements due to damage.

Obtaining a personal membership for children and taking them on regular visits to the facility can instill a great love of reading in them at an early age. It could help older kids and college students develop better study and research skills which will lead to better grades. Adults could find an endless supply of reading materials or other activities.

There are quite a few advantages to those who hold plastic library cards, no matter what their age group. It offers one the freedom to learn more about subjects they are interested in or to explore and discover something new. Everyone, from children to teens and on to adults, will gain access to many resources such as reference materials, books, audio and visual media, internet and many other activities.
