Sexism In Sports And The Entire Sector At Large

By Etta Bowen

Female discrimination is not a new thing in the society. It is an issue which has been going back and forth ever since the colonial days. There are many areas in which women are looked down upon due to their sex. They include admission to various institutions, job searches among others. The latest one is sexism in sports; the sports sector and sexism is arising issue which needs to be given immediate attention and failure to which it may result to a fading and crushing industry.

The first instance is coverage of the female athletes by the media. The media has been accused of giving less attention to female sports professionals. More attention is given to male participants as compared to the female gender. This has been seen to highly demoralize women and often leads to male athletes feeling superior.

Also, in the past years, complaints have been got about the kind of clothes that the females wear during the sporting activities. The clothes are tight and small mainly supposed to attract the male gender. Some are very small to the extent that they make the sportsmen uncomfortable. Efforts should be made to accommodate all types of people such that they do not dress in attires which are not pleasant to them.

Ladies who take part in sports have at most times raised issues about being mishandled sexually. This may be either through direct abuse using sexual terms or physical assault like rape. Many wonder who is responsible for this kind of act and the answer lies just before their eyes. Their coaches, instructors and fellow teammates give them these tough times.

There are some cases where women are chosen to participate in games with regard to how they look. Most of these games forget about the skills and concentrate in their looks. There is however no case in history where the physical appearance of the male players has been taken into consideration. This has highly contributed to female discrimination in this sector.

Football is a game which has been accused of having sexual discrimination. First of all, female football teams are not put on high regard as compared to male football. All the major football games are male dominated. Also, female referees and coaches are looked down upon. Their ideas and opinions are not taken seriously. This has highly demoralized women in taking up these jobs as they are not made comfortable.

Sexism is a huge factor during golfing. This is perceived as a mans terrain too. This has now gone as far as having golf clubs that do not register women but only women which is the highest form of discrimination that can be displayed. With this discrimination made evident, most golfers seem to give a blind eye to the issue and are reluctant to speak about the matter while interrogated in efforts to remedy this.

In conclusion, although majority of the people have not identified this as an issue which needs to be looked into, issues should be raised concerning the major steps which are supposed to be taken to counter check this problem. Equal treatment should be given to all genders in order for the entire fraternity to be able to grow.
