Cases That Encourage Fire Retardant Coatings

By Essie Osborn

Fire can be quite a menace sometimes; it makes investments that have been accumulated in years to go down in shambles. That is why most materials need to be protected with fire retardant coatings. Building materials, executive cars, airplanes and other structures would be safer if they were fire proofed. In case of an outbreak, at least the harm will not be all that great.

Buildings nowadays are constructed with safety as a core requirement. The walls need to be well constructed such that they cannot easily burn. This is done by the use of metals that are non conductors of heat. The engineers have to ensure that these are very strong since live electrical wires that form part of the wiring sometimes can become faulty. As a precautionary measure, a thorough environmental assessment test is done before a structure is erected.

There is a special paint that is normally fireproof and is preferred as a covering for walls. The paint is highly effective in preventing the inflammability of the surfaces. Water is a good insulator since its conduction of heat is quite poor. It is thus preferred as a solvent for most of these paints. If combined with the right substrates, it makes one of the best extinguishers.

Adhesion is the key quality required for the surface in question. The sticking of the chemicals will thus not be affected. For the product to last longer, it must be able to dry very fast. Since the conduction is normally caused by positive and negative charges, the surface should be neutrally charged as well as the coating used. Water is therefore the best solvent for this function since it has these properties.

Vehicles too require fireproofing. Those that carry big personalities normally have anti bomb techniques. However, it is also important for the normal ones too must be fireproofed since they get involved in fiery accidents most often. Since we cannot know when they are going to occur, avoiding accidents is mandatory.

This protection is necessary even for aircrafts. Whenever there is an aircraft accident, fires are the common consequences. Many people normally have their lives risked by such situations. These are caused by minor mistakes that can easily be avoided. One way is to make the final coverings using fireproof elements. All the components must be tested and proven to be in perfect working condition before the plane takes off. If such dangers can be prevented, then it better be done.

The materials used for coating should however, meet some required standards. Apart from preventing the harm from flames, they also should be free of harmful and poisonous chemicals. Some chemicals are known to be non conductors of heat but are highly corrosive. Such should be avoided at all costs. Poison is more dangerous as it leaves longer lasting negative environmental impact than fires.

Developers should therefore concentrate on making fire retardants for various materials. Household goods like puff foam mattresses normally propagate the bad effects since they easily catch flame. Fireproofing wood is also vital since it forms the bulk of the roof and the walls. For other structures, temporary coatings can be applied that are replaced from time to time.
