James Malinchak's Never Surely Stop Learning Part 1 of 3

By Troy Dickson

"An open mind is the beginning of self-discovery and growth. We can't learn anything new until we can admit that we don't already know anything." -Erwin G. Hall

I'm sure you have heard the phrase Knowledge is Power! How true this is for anyone especially people in business or people who desire success. The more you learn, the more you grow. The more you grow the more diverse your background. The more diverse your background becomes the more valuable you will be to yourself and others. The problem with most people is they think they know it all. People who know it all are stopping themselves from learning. When you think you know it all your mind isn't open to new ideas as well as opinions.

"It's what you know after you know it all that counts." -John Wooden, legendary UCLA basketball coach

To become more valuable and compelling, open your mind to new ideas and opinions. Make an effort to learn something new each day, whether in or out of school. It's not only beneficial to pay attention in school, but also outside of school. Pay attention to current events that are happening in everyday life. Take the initiative to keep learning, but how could you do this? It's easy - communicate and listen, write, read, and watch TV. Let's start with communicating and listening, since the 2 go hand in hand.

Communicate and Listen

"You've got 2 ears and one mouth. They should be used in that proportion." ~Unknown

You are communicating with people every day of your life. Every time you communicate with someone you have the opportunity to learn something new if you will listen. Most people communicate and never listen. They want to talk and get their own opinions out. Therefore, when others are talking ask them to elaborate on what they are talking about when it pertains to a hobby, skill, or business.

Talk to a variety of people. People of different ages, nationalities, backgrounds. Do not be intimidated because they may be a little different than you. It is easy to get people talking. Simply ask them questions. People love talking about themselves, especially if they feel they are teaching you how to do something. It makes them feel valuable. Questions start a conversation and keep conversation going. Never be scared to ask people questions. That is how you learn.

Learning is one the most overlooked gifts, so remember to be different from everyone else. Accept the gift of knowledge and understand that everyone is an expert in something. Therefore, find something that they excel at and ask them to tell you more. People will appreciate the opportunity to share their passion. As a result, you will be able to appreciate the gift of knowledge that they just shared with you.

"One thing I constantly do is communicate with various people. One percent of what I learn each day is from speaking with people. The other 99% is from listening to them." -James Malinchak
