Handmade Jewelers Create Unique Artisan Earrings

By Vicki Diaz

The artist category includes many different things. Some artists sell their work and others keep it. Still others write or act. Jewelry makers that create artisan earrings are very skilled in their craft. They usually make earrings from metals, clay, paper, or wood. Some items are simple and others complex but all are distinctive.

Most people think that all artists work with their hands and sell their work. Painters, sculptors, writers, and musicians all meet this description. However, there are other types of artists; some who never sell their work and some who act rather than create. Art is a broad category that includes many different activities and this definition includes some professionals and some amateurs.

Handmade jewelry is made by skilled workers using a variety of tools, products, and processes. Some articles are constructed entirely out of wood and then either painted or carved. Others are formed from twisted wire and stones and end up elaborate or fragile. Even paper and old magazines have been torn and rolled into beads then used in earrings and pendants.

There is definitely a market for simple articles or ones that contain one or two gems. Sapphires and diamonds never go out of style and have remained popular for years. However, some artists like to use semi-precious gems like amethysts and jade and design their jewelry to be very bright and colorful. Still others will take recycled goods or coins and create works of art.

Distinctive looks are often created by artists by using clay, porcelain, or acrylic. These mediums can be formed into different shapes and then baked or even poured into molds. Craft stores sell molds that are already made into common shapes, like squares and circles. Several different colors blended together can make an interesting swirl or a even a new shade. Small beads, gems, and stones are often added to accent these creations.

Some artists like to use precious metals such as gold and silver in their work. Settings are sold in many arts and craft stores for jewelers who do not like to make their own. Metal clay is also popular with many jewelry makers. The clay contains binders and small pieces of metal that is formed into different shapes. Then the artist uses a torch to burn off the clay, leaving a beautiful and distinctive piece.

There are many places to sell handmade articles. Online auctions and stores are common but many people prefer to sell their items in a store. Of course, some artists make their articles for pleasure or to give as gifts. If they do sell their creations then typically the price is set less than $100 unless it is a well known artist. If an artist has a following then they can often set much higher prices.

For jewelry designers the world is full of possibilities. Ordinary items are made into amazing pieces of jewelry. Artisan earrings are created from things that most people would discard. Some artists sell their merchandise for thousands of dollars and others are very inexpensive.
