The average scalp has about 100,000 hairs. After growing for about two to six years, the hairs have a rest period before falling out. They are replaced by others and the cycle continues. This means that all people shed hairs and it is common to find strands in a brush.

There are numerous medical conditions that can make this happen. Aging is one of the main culprits and trauma or chronic stress also cause this problem. Sometimes severe loss is due to a genetic condition and other times it may be caused by too much or too little of one hormone or another.

If you have an underlying medical condition or nutritional deficiency, once this is taken care of there is no reason why it should not return to its former state. Those having chemotherapy, for example, find that it does grow again after treatment stops. However, all too often the situation is more permanent in nature.

There are medications which can be taken to arrest loss and help it to grow again. These are usually taken orally such as one which is prescribed for post-menopausal women. This medication stops the production of a hormone which triggers the problem. Topical medications are also available over the counter in pharmacies.

Numerous products on the market are designed specifically for this problem and some of them are more effective than others. Just as many different causes exist for it falling out, so the solution is not the same for everyone. If the loss is a result of poor nutrition or a crash diet, then there is every possibility that taking a product with vitamins will help the condition to improve. However, such a product may have little effect on someone suffering from a genetic condition.

Products can work in many different ways. There are lasers which emit a low level light to stimulate the follicles. It can take two to three months before any results are seen. Other treatments deliver organic proteins to the shaft of the follicle.

Products which contain microscopic keratin fibers help to conceal loss and build volume. They are sprinkled over the sparse areas of the scalp and attach to tiny colorless hairs and normal hairs. They bond tightly due to being electrically charged and form a natural pattern on the scalp. Masking lotions can also be used to eliminate the contrast between bald and less bald areas on the scalp. They are particularly effective at covering a single bald spot.

Those who suffer permanent loss have the option of wearing a wig and many natural looking ones are available. However, some people do not like wearing wigs and for these, products which conceal their loss can make a difference. From the many thinning hair solutions available, you need to find what works best for you. Just remember that you are not alone in your predicament as this is a common problem shared by many people.
