Some Beginner Woodworking Projects Can Take You Into A New Hobby

By Paulette Mason

You have seen some of the very nice pieces of furniture and decorative items many people have in their homes. You have admired them and asked questions about where the home owner got them. They may tell you that these are one of a kind pieces that they made and you may or may not believe them. Then you find out the person started out by doing beginner woodworking projects that grew from there.

A lot of people furnish their homes, largely, with the woodworking projects they created in their garage or shop. There is nothing difficult about doing this if you take care of the proper measurements and make sure you are working safely. This is all about creativity, imagination and love for the wood.

The first major project you will have is the one that every handy man needs. That is a tool box to carry all of your little things in. This is just a rectangular box and a handle. There may even be dividers in it for a classification of different items. Scrap wood pieces can be used for this and the size does not matter, however, measuring this piece will help you define your skills in this matter.

Tables are very easy projects as they can be made quickly, finished and they are needed in every room. They can be sanded and stained or varnished and polished to a high luster. Creating this for other people can often finance other projects you need for your own purposes. Chairs are the same thing and a matching set is something everyone wants to have.

Making a fine piece for your home or for sale gives you the opportunity to select one or more of a large group of woods. Some are quite dark, such as mahogany and some are light as in pine or oak. Others have fine grains such as most hard woods and some are quite coarse, such as in reclaimed pieces from old barns or even pallets. The beauty, within each piece, can be used to great effect whenever you decide to use it.

Tools are an important element of your wood working. Many people have stayed with non powered tools, such as awls, hand saws and cranked drills. A very good item to have with this system is a selection of hammers, planes and solid work bench that holds the piece of wood as you are working on it.

Powered tools are the modern approach to this hobby which can become more than that. Drill presses, circular saws as well as various hand drills, sanders and routers will make quick work of any project. The problem here, of course, is the chance that these tools can get away from you.

The most important element of any wood working project, or group of them, is the plans you have for them. Many simple designs can be created on a piece of paper and immediately launched into. Many others, from beginner items to advanced constructions, need a bit more detail than that. Finding the right plans, designed for your use, complete with a materials list and detailed instructions will also help you make the perfect home more comfortable and welcoming.
