By Don Etherton

It is important for business owners to know what the guidelines are for displaying an ADA sign. They must be in compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act regulations. Placing signs at the appropriate height and location is the easiest way to comply. It is vital that the business knows what the correct measurements mounting signage.

In order for businesses to be in full compliance with the law, the signs need to be hung at a specific level. For the proper effect they also need to be placed correctly. There are specific guidelines that regulate how signage is to be mounted.

To measure accurately and according the ADA guidelines, the height is to be measured from the floor or ground surface up. The term floor surface means any surface that is finished with carpet, tile, or other covering. If the floor is concrete it is considered the finished floor and you must begin measuring from that surface.

Measuring always starts at ground surfaces and ends at the bottom of the letters on the sign that are raised. There can be more than one line of raised text on the signage. Painted, decal, or graphic letters or symbols are not considered raised and should not be included when measuring.

Signs are to be mounted at a level no less than four feet, or forty eight inches above the finished floor surface. Start to measure at floor level and move up until you reach the given number of feet. When your measurement is forty eight inches from floor to the bottom of the last set of raised lettering you will be in compliance.

There are additional specifications for properly hanging an ADA sign that should be considered. For example, there may be a difference in how to measure if there are multiple lines of raised text. It is a good idea to check with a state or federal ADA specialist to make certain that you have the correct information.
