What To Consider When Choosing Prisoner Transport Systems

By Mattie Knight

The process of moving prisoners from one place to another is usually a sensitive affair. To ensure maximum security and that prisoners do not breakout or hurt each other or hurt the law enforcement officers transporting them, it is vital to select prisoner transport systems that are secure. Here are factors to consider when making your selection.

Decide on the means of transportation that you want used. This will mainly depend on where you are moving the inmates to. For short distances or for distances that can be easily accessed, you are better of using vehicles. Rail is another option that can be explored. Air transport can also be used if the inmate needs to be somewhere urgently or if they have to travel a long distance.

How much you are willing to spend during the process of transportation matters. Generally, moving inmates is an expensive venture. You have to pay the officers who have to accompany the criminals and also pay for their food and clothing. You also have to pay for the fuel used and the cost of securing and insuring the vehicle.

How many inmates you will be moving on a regular basis should be considered. If you frequently move many prisoners, it would be advisable to buy a big vehicle. However, if you mostly move a small number of prisoners then a smaller vehicle will be more preferable. If possible, you should have different vehicles in different sizes, so that you can pick the most suitable option depending on the circumstances of the move you need to make.

While there are ready made vehicles that come fitted and secured, there is also room for ordering a customized vehicle. A customized option can be suitable if you are not in a hurry to use the vehicle. It is also the best option if you want your vehicle secured in a certain way, which may be different from how other vehicles are generally fitted.

The profile of the prisoners to be transported should be thought about. Hardened criminals require more security during transportation than petty thieves. This means that you may have to use more secure vehicles for dangerous criminals. You will also need to have armored vehicles and extra personnel to accompany the vehicle transporting the criminal.

The vehicle should be fitted with communication equipment. The more modern the equipment, the better. This helps guards to communicate with the relevant authorities while in transit. They can call for help if the need arises. If the vehicle does not come with the communication equipment you want, it should at least be possible for you to install the equipment that you prefer.

Make sure to purchase your vehicle from a recognized and certified vendor. This increases the chances that the product you get meets the required standards of security. Always check to see if the vendor is recognized by state security agents. It is also advisable to buy from vendors who come highly recommended, so do some due diligence and ask around to find out where other law enforcement agencies source their vehicles from.
